Netflix’s latest documentary, A Gorilla Story, offers an intimate look into the remarkable lives of Rwandan gorillas, guided by the legendary narration of British naturalist David Attenborough.
Attenborough narrates this intimate journey, blending decades of experience with the wonder he first felt upon meeting Pablo, a young gorilla whose life became the heart of this film.
“I first met Pablo when he was 3 years old,” Attenborough recalls. “Eighteen years later, he set out on his own to build a family. Almost 50 years after that, I had the chance to tell the story of Pablo and his descendants, who still inhabit the slopes of the Virungas.”
The trailer captures moments of profound connection: gorillas interacting with one another, gentle gestures that mirror human emotion, all guided by Attenborough’s calm, reflective narration.
The story traces how an early encounter with Pablo shaped Attenborough’s lifelong dedication to understanding and protecting wildlife, including sharing the names of Pablo’s family members.
Attenborough’s narration reminds viewers that empathy is the first step toward conservation, stating that gorillas are not distant subjects of study but individuals, each with distinct personalities and behaviors.
“There is more meaning and mutual understanding in exchanging a glance with a gorilla,” he explains.
Beyond showcasing the unique lives of Rwanda’s gorillas, the documentary conveys a broader message on how connection matters.
“Their powerful sense of togetherness is expressed through chains of tender physical contact,” he adds.
Attenborough (born 1926) is a legendary English broadcaster and natural historian whose documentaries, including Life and The Blue Planet, have inspired generations to understand and protect the natural world.
