The 2026 Tour du Rwanda officially got underway on Sunday with a spectacular opening stage that delivered excitement, speed, and a dramatic sprint finish. Israeli rider Itamar Einhorn, representing Team NSN, powered to victory after an intense 174-kilometer race from Rukomo in Gicumbi District to Rwamagana District.
The race began at 11:00 a.m., with 84 cyclists from 17 teams rolling out of Rukomo amid cheers from hundreds of cycling enthusiasts who lined the roads. The peloton passed through Nyagahanga, Ngarama, Cyabayaga, Ryabega, Nyagatare, Karangazi, Rwagitima, and Gakenke, where local residents turned out in large numbers to support the riders and celebrate the start of Rwanda’s premier cycling event.
The stage featured two intermediate sprints that intensified the competition. Brazilian rider Da Silva made his presence felt early, claiming the first intermediate sprint at the 72.6-kilometer mark in Nyagatare. He earned three bonus seconds, finishing ahead of Heidermann of Team Bikaid, who took two seconds, while Rwanda’s Uwiduhaye secured one second for third place.
Da Silva struck again at the second intermediate sprint in Kabarore, Gatsibo District, at kilometer 113.4. Once more, he collected three bonus seconds, with Heidermann following for two seconds and Marti taking one second in third place. These bonus sprints added tactical tension as teams positioned themselves strategically ahead of the final stretch.
As the riders approached Rwamagana, the pace intensified, setting up a bunch sprint finish near Rwamagana Pension Plaza. In a fiercely contested dash to the line, Einhorn proved strongest, edging out his rivals to claim Stage One in a time of 4 hours, 5 minutes, and 2 seconds.
Munoz Hodei Gabina of Soudal Quick-Step finished second in 4 hours, 5 minutes, and 15 seconds, while Girmay Mewael of Istanbul team came third in 4 hours and 17 seconds. Rwanda’s Muhoza Eric of Team Amani impressed with an 11th-place finish, while national team rider Tuyizere Etienne also delivered a solid performance.
Stage Two is set for Monday, covering 134.6 kilometers from Nyamata in Bugesera District to Huye District. With strong competition already on display, the 2026 Tour du Rwanda promises more thrilling battles in the days ahead.
