President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeanette Kagame alongside other senior government officials laid a wreath at the Heroes Mausoleum at Remera as Rwanda marks the heroes day on Sunday, February 1.
A hero according to the chancellery for Heroes, National Orders and Decorations of Honour (CHENO) is an individual who pursues a goal with selflessness and dedication, leading to an outstanding action that benefits others.
Heroes’ Day is observed annually to honor men and women whose bravery and sacrifice shaped the nation’s history and laid the foundation for peace, unity, and development. Rwanda recognizes its heroes in three categories: Imanzi, Imena, and Ingenzi.
The category of Imanzi includes Maj Gen Fred Gisa Rwigema and the Unknown Soldier, who symbolizes all those who gave their lives during the liberation struggle. The Imena category is composed of distinguished figures such as King Mutara III Rudahigwa, Michel Rwagasana, former Prime Minister Agatha Uwilingiyimana, Félicité Niyitegeka, and the students of Nyange Secondary School, whose courage remains an inspiration to generations. To date, no individual has been designated under the Ingenzi Heroes category.
This year’s commemoration marked the 32nd Heroes’ Day, celebrated under the theme “Heroism and Unity of Rwandans, Pillars of Development.” The theme underscores the central role of courage, selflessness, and national unity in Rwanda’s continued progress.
Members of the diplomatic community also took part in the ceremony. Ambassador Professor Charity Munyeruke of Zimbabwe, who serves as the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Rwanda, laid a wreath in honor of Rwanda’s heroes, symbolizing international solidarity and respect for the country’s history.
Following the wreath-laying, all attendees observed a moment of silence to pay tribute to the fallen heroes whose legacy continues to guide Rwanda’s journey toward sustainable development and national cohesion.
Heroes’ Day remains a powerful reminder of the values that bind Rwandans together and the enduring spirit of patriotism that defines the nation.
