The University of Rwanda’s Huye Campus is welcoming a new cohort of first-year students, as the University extended the start of the academic calendar to ensure a smoother transition from high school and to accommodate them.
Speaking to The Kaminuza Star, several new students expressed excitement and gratitude for joining Rwanda’s largest public university.
Samuel Mwezukeye, who enrolled in the College of Arts and Social Sciences to study History and Heritage, said being at UR was a dream come true.
“I am so glad to be at the University of Rwanda. Being here is a dream come true. I have always admired the history and culture of our nation, and now I have a chance to study and contribute to preserving it,” he said with a smile.
Funny Akaliza, admitted to pursue Economics, shared a message of hope and perseverance.
“It was not easy to come to UR, but by God’s power, it became possible,” she said. “The new multiple-choice format in national examinations was challenging, but I stayed focused and worked hard. I believe my performance and determination are what brought me here.”
In his address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Didas Kayihura explained that while the academic year for continuing students began in September, the start for first-year students was extended to October 27 to allow for proper preparation and induction.
“We have two categories this year — those who waited a full year and those who completed high school in August. We are bringing them together, which is why the start for first-year students was extended,” he said.
He also acknowledged that accommodation remains a challenge, though the university has prioritized first-year students, especially girls, in the allocation of hostel spaces.
According to the University of Rwanda administration, a total of 14,152 students have been admitted across all campuses this year — including 6,867 from the 2024 cohort and 7,285 from the 2025 intake — reflecting the institution’s steady growth and commitment to expanding access to higher education in Rwanda.
