In a monumental pace for African sports and global cycling, Rwanda is poised to welcome an estimated 15 thousandinternational visitors as it hosts the UCI Road World Championships from September 21-28.
This historic event marks the first time in the championship’s103-year history that it will be held on African soil, transforming the vibrant capital of Kigali into the epicenter of the cycling world and showcasing the nation’s readiness on an unprecedented scale.
The 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda is more than just a sporting event; it is a declaration of Africa’s growing prominence in the international sporting arena.
The event is expected to draw 10 thousand athletes, 5 thousandofficials and guests, generating significant economic activity and global media attention. With 700 media accreditations, broadcasts in 124 countries, and an estimated 330 million TV viewers, Rwanda is set to capture the world’s look.
The number to host alerted for readiness as Minister of Sports,Nelly Mukazayire confidently affirmed.
“We are pleased to announce that, for the first time, there will be a Women’s Under-23 category in the Road World Championships. It is also the first time that the Individual Time Trial (ITT) will start indoors, at BK Arena, on Sunday,” Mukazayire stated during a press conference.
She emphasized the collaborative efforts of various institutions to ensure the seamless execution of the championships.
Hosting big number promises substantial economic benefits. City Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva highlighted the opportunities for local businesses.
“The Championships are an opportunity for Kigali’s citizens and businesses to shine. We urge hotels, restaurants, and entrepreneurs to welcome our visitors and show the best of what the city offers,” he urged
The influx of international visitors is expected to boost tourism, hospitality, and local commerce, fostering economic growth across various sectors.
As the countdown to September 21, 2025 continues, Rwanda stands ready to make history, not just as a host nation, but as a testament to the power of sport to unite, inspire, and transform.
