The government plans to expand RwandAir’s destinations and double its passenger capacity by 2029, Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva told Parliament on Tuesday, August 12.
The government has set international trade as a key priority, aiming to more than double the value of exports from $3.5bn in 2023 to $7.3bn by 2029. Projections indicate that exports will grow by an average of 13% annually, while imports are expected to rise by 8.7% each year.
The ambitious plan also extends into encompassing broad development in the economy; agriculture, livestock, and various other infrastructures, all aimed at significantly improving the economic well-being of Rwandan citizens.
The Prime Minister emphasized that prioritizing national and feeder roads is particularly strategic, designed to enhance the movement of both people and goods, directly addressing logistical challenges that have historically impacted productivity and market access.
“Over 300 kilometers of national roads will be built and rehabilitated, and additionally, over 500 kilometers of feeder roads will be constructed to facilitate farmers and livestock keepers in bringing their produce and other goods to markets,” he said.
Dr. Nsengiyumva emphasized the critical role of these new and rehabilitated roads in supporting the agricultural and livestock sectors with an expected increase of 50% in output from these activities; the expanded road network will be crucial for efficiently transporting produce and goods to markets.
