The government has advised public servants in Kigali to work remotely amid the anticipated UCI Road World Champion from September 21-28.
Public and private institutions are strongly encouraged to adopt ‘virtual working arrangements during the championship’ period.
This event will mark a historic first for Africa, positioning Rwanda and its people at the forefront of international sports and showcasing the nation’s remarkable journey and readiness to welcome the world.
The Government of Rwanda has been diligently preparing for this global spectacle, with careful planning underway to ensure a seamless and memorable experience for athletes, officials, and spectators alike.
“Public servants in Kigali are advised to work remotely, except for those providing essential services, and will continue without interruption,” reads the statement released by the Government on Wednesday, August 13.
The championship is set to bring the world’s top men and women cyclists in 6 categories: men and women elite, under 23 men and women, and Junior men and women to race through Kigali’s picturesque and challenging terrain.
According to the statement, to accommodate the event, “temporary road closures will be implemented along designated race routes at specific hours to ensure the safety of athletes, officials, and the public.”
Beyond traffic management, the championship will have a direct impact on daily life in Kigali as announcement discloses measures to be in place.
“All schools within Kigali City will observe a closure from September 21 to 28,,” with the Ministry of Education working closely with school administrators and parents to facilitate this transition.
“Alternative and detour routes will be clearly marked and communicated in advance, in coordination with traffic authorities, to minimize disruptions caused by road closures.”
Although specific projections for Kigali are yet to be released, the historical data suggests a considerable economic uplift through tourism, hospitality, and related services.
Government encourages visitors to Visit Rwanda though its ‘Tembera URwanda” programme, as a chance to explore Rwanda’s unique destinations, stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality.
Special Fan Zones will be set up across the city, offering the public a chance to witness world-class cycling up close and immerse themselves in the electrifying atmosphere.
The government also urges everyone to plan ahead, support each other, and collectively embrace the 2025 UCI Road World Championships.
