The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) on Thursday, August 7, arrested Omar Munyaneza, the former Director General of the Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC), along with two other officials from the same institution, over alleged involvement in corruption-related crimes.
According to a statement released by RIB, the trio is under investigation for charges including corruption, favoritism, and soliciting sexual favors.
They are currently being held at RIB stations in Kimihurura and Kicukiro as prosecutors prepare their case files for submission to the National Public Prosecution Authority.
RIB commended members of the public who helped uncover the alleged misconduct and issued a warning against using public office for personal gain.
“The Bureau will continue to fight such practices in the interest of public accountability,” the statement reads in part.
The arrests came just two days after Parliament urged authorities to launch criminal investigations into unaccounted-for spending in 10 public institutions. Among them is WASAC, which reportedly spent Rwf1.8 billion on three projects in the 2023/24 fiscal year without proper documentation, according to the Auditor General’s report.
Munyaneza, a former Member of Parliament, had been leading WASAC since September 2023 before being replaced by Asaph Kabaasha as CEO on July 16.
