The University of Rwanda has upgraded its student medical insurance system, introducing a digital document to simplify access to healthcare services.
In a notice issued on June 17, 2025, the Medical Insurance Scheme of the University of Rwanda (MIS/UR) announced that the system upgrade is now fully operational and will ease the way students access medical care.
The newly upgraded MIS/UR system introduces a cardless approach, a major departure from the previous reliance on printed student cards. This innovation is set to eliminate delays and provide students with unprecedented flexibility in accessing healthcare.
“Our old system relied on printed student cards, which we found led to significant delays in getting them to students. To streamline this, we’ve transitioned to a card less approach,” Alexia Kaneza, Director General of MIS/UR explains.
Under the new system, students can now receive medical services by presenting any of several identification methods, including national ID, student card, and existing MIS/UR card.
“This multi-option access ensures that students are not hindered by the absence of a specific card, promoting more immediate and convenient healthcare access,” Kaneza adds.
The main goal is to remove all existing difficulties, making it easier for anyone to access services using one of the methods outlined.
Beyond just ease of access, the upgraded system also offers a crucial opportunity for data correction.
“It also offers a valuable opportunity for those who might have previously submitted incorrect information to update it accurately,” she added, highlighting the system’s role in maintaining precise student records.
To fully leverage the benefits of this enhanced system, all students are required to take a few simple steps. Following the upgrade, students are required to submit personal details including their registration number, active phone number, email address, and a recent passport-size photo.
This information is vital for ensuring seamless access to medical services moving forward. Students will also be able to receive a digital student medical access document upon successful registration.
The university has also made provisions for final-year undergraduate students, allowing them to extend medical coverage for one additional year after graduation by applying through the MIS/UR portal.
The university encourages all undergraduate and postgraduate students to promptly update their information to benefit from the streamlined process.
