Changes in the Rwanda Premier League begin today

Significant changes in the Rwanda Premier League will begin today, following a press conference held on Thursday evening, May 15, 2025, at the T2000 Hotel in Kigali.

The Rwanda Premier League’s organizing body briefed journalists on new measures aimed at enhancing the quality of the competition in the final stages of the 2024–2025 season. Among the announcements were changes to match scheduling and plans to recognize outstanding performers.

Chairman of the league’s organizing body, Yussuf Mudaheranwa, revealed that in a bid to maintain fairness, the remaining matches for title contenders Rayon Sports and APR FC will be played simultaneously.

“Rayon Sports and APR FC will now play their remaining league matches at the same time to prevent either team from knowing the other’s results beforehand,” Mudaheranwa said. “This will ensure that neither side’s performance is influenced by the outcome of the other.”

The league has reached matchday 27, with just three fixtures remaining. Rayon Sports currently tops the table with 59 points, closely followed by APR FC with 58.

Starting this Saturday, the new scheduling takes effect. Rayon Sports will travel to face Bugesera FC, while APR FC will host Gorilla FC at Kigali Pelé Stadium. Both matches, initially scheduled at different times, will now kick off at 3:00 p.m.

However, the final matchday may pose logistical challenges if the title race remains close. Both teams are scheduled to play in Kigali, potentially requiring the use of Amahoro Stadium. The simultaneous scheduling will apply only to title contenders, not to teams battling relegation.

Chairman Mudaheranwa also announced the 2025 Rwanda Premier League Awards, which will honor standout performers from the current season. The ceremony is set for Friday, May 30, 2025, at the Kigali Convention Center.

Awards will be presented in seven categories: Player of the Season, Goalkeeper of the Season, Goal of the Season, Coach of the Season, Young Player of the Season, Top Scorer, and Best XI (Team of the Season).
