Ministry of Education (MINEDUC), on Tuesday April 8, asked the administration of Ecole Belge de Kigali to start the transition from Belgian education program to an alternative program for the next academic year effective by September 2025.
In a notice letter published from the office of the minister of Education to the administration of Ecole Belge de Kigali headed by Director Delphine Vico, and the Legal representative and President of Parents Committee, Richard Rwihandagaza, the school was informed that, by effective September 2025, it must cease implementation of the Belgian education program, which currently operates at the school.
The ministry also advised the school to begin making the necessary arrangements to transition to an alternative education program for the academic year 2025-2026. It also promised to support the school in this transition process.

This decision by the Ministry of Education follows public notice by Rwanda Governance Board on March 27 that prohibits all non-governmental organizations operating in Rwanda from engaging in any form of cooperation with the government of Belgium and its affiliated entities.
The Government of Rwanda, on march 17, announced that it has severed diplomatic ties with Belgium with immediate effect, ordering all Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours.
In February, Rwanda suspended its development cooperation with Belgium, calling out the European country for leading an aggressive campaign, together with DR Congo, to sabotage its access to development finance, including in multilateral institutions.
