Dr. Thierry B. Murangira, spokesperson for Rwanda’s Investigation Bureau (RIB), has urged social media influencers to use their platforms in the fight against genocide ideology.
In a recent interview on the YouTube channel Chita Magic, Murangira expressed concern over the inaction of prominent figures, particularly those with large followings, in confronting genocide denial and distortion.
“That is cowardice,” Murangira stated, criticizing those who remain silent despite their influence. “You cannot claim to be grateful for the opportunities in this country when others have struggled to secure them, so when it’s time to stand up against evil, staying silent is cowardice.’’
Dr. Murangira further encouraged influencers and artists to take a stand, urging them to use their reach to challenge genocide denial. “True fame means using your platform to create content that confronts those who deny the genocide and spread harmful ideologies,” he added.
He also addressed the responsibility of those with large audiences, especially during critical times of remembrance. “Many on social media remain silent despite having millions of followers. You see genocide ideology being spread from neighbouring countries, yet choose to remain quiet. Use your influence to condemn this evil,” he said.
Murangira concluded with a powerful message about the dangers of promoting division. “Spreading genocide ideology and division undermines the very foundation of Rwandan unity,” he warned.
His remarks come at a time when Rwanda continues to battle genocide ideology, particularly among the youth and on social media, including international figures who still deny the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, as we come close to the 31st commemoration.
