Through dedicated initiatives led by the Environmental Club, student participation, and employees, UR is preserving its natural surroundings while promoting eco-friendly practices.
The University of Rwanda (UR) is making significant strides in environmental conservation, ensuring a green and sustainable campus that benefits both students and the ecosystem.
UR has implemented various green initiatives, including tree planting programs, waste management systems, and eco-friendly policies.
According to the President of the Environmental Club, Modest Ukwishaka , these efforts aim to reduce pollution, enhance biodiversity, and create a healthier learning environment.
“We regularly organize tree-planting events, clean-up campaigns, and awareness programs to educate students on environmental sustainability,” the club president stated.
Environmental preservation at UR is crucial for maintaining the university’s natural beauty, improving air quality, and combating climate change.
Green spaces on campus also provide students with a refreshing atmosphere that enhances their well-being and academic performance as the students kept saying.
“Studying in a green environment makes a big difference,” said Inshuti Noella, a second-year law student. “It reduces stress and makes learning more enjoyable.”
Noella, who we met sitting within this nature, said she sometimes sits down in nature to let go of all her problems as a form of therapy.

Students are not the only participants in these conservations as the cleaning employees take it as a responsibility to keep this environment clean.
Gemima Nyiramuruta, an employee at UR, says that they have shifts of cleaning where some clean in the morning by depositing every dustbin from every corner on campus to waste disposal and picking up particles thrown around the garden while others work in the evening.
