During the Presidential Citizen Outreach, President Kagame grants Rwandan citizenship to DJ Ira.

President Paul Kagame has granted Rwandan citizenship to Iradukunda Grace Divine, better known as DJ Ira, during the Presidential Citizen Outreach event held at BK Arena on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

The Burundian-born DJ has built a successful career in Rwanda’s music scene, and her plea for citizenship was met with an encouraging response from the head of state.

DJ Ira addressed the crowd, taking a moment to commend President Kagame for his leadership and vision, which she believes has created equal opportunities for all.

“This country has been an extraordinary blessing to me,” she said, reflecting on her journey in Rwanda since she moved to Kigali in 2015.

She went on to emphasise how Rwanda provides opportunities to both girls and boys alike, regardless of their background.

The DJ, who has become a key figure in Rwanda’s entertainment industry, spoke passionately about her desire to become an official citizen of the country that had given her so much.

“My wish was to ask for Rwandan citizenship and be considered a child of Rwanda, as if I were one of your own,” she stated, her words resonating with the crowd.

In a response that drew applause from the audience, President Kagame immediately approved her request, assuring her that the relevant authorities would take the necessary steps to finalize the process.

“I have given my approval, and the rest will follow as it should be done,” the President said, affirming the nation’s dedication to inclusivity and support for all who contribute to Rwanda’s growth.

DJ Ira’s journey to success in Rwanda began in 2016 when she was guided by her cousin, the well-known DJ Bissosso. Having moved to Kigali from Burundi after finishing high school, she faced early opposition from her family, who encouraged her to complete her studies before pursuing a career in music.

However, her determination prevailed, and today, she is recognised as one of the most prominent DJs in Rwanda, known for performing at major events and concerts across the country.

This Presidential Citizen Outreach event was especially significant, as it was the first such gathering since the 2024 presidential election. Drawing an audience of over 8,000 people from across Rwanda.
